Who we are
Environment Illinois is a citizen-based environmental advocacy project of Environment America. We believe there’s something special about Illinois — something worth protecting and preserving for future generations. Whether it’s the light shimmering off Lake Michigan, the wild beauty of the Illinois and other rivers, or Galena’s rolling hills, Illinois’s natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways.
Yet the places we love and the environmental values we share are too often threatened by powerful industries, shortsighted politicians and more. Defending our environment requires independent research, tough-minded advocacy and spirited grassroots action. That’s the idea behind Environment Illinois. Together with thousands of supporters from all walks of life, we take the kind of action that wins tangible results for our environment.

What we do
Funded by supporters like you, we research the challenges confronting our environment and educate the public about what’s at stake. Through our research reports, news conferences, interviews with reporters, op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, and more, we raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sensible solutions. Our canvassers meet people where they are — in public places or door to door — raising awareness, recruiting new supporters and activists, and raising funds to support our work.
When decisions are being made about our environment, our elected officials hear plenty from oil companies, developers and other powerful interests. We make the case for our environment and help people like you make your voice heard — using methods like petitions, emails, letters and phone calls, all delivered to the right people just when it matters most.

Putting your support to work
Environment Illinois has a proven track record of winning real results for our environment.
- Protecting Lake Michigan.
Loopholes in the Clean Water Act have left more than half of the waterways that feed and filter Lake Michigan open to unlimited pollution. At the urging of our staff and allies, the Obama administration has moved to fix this. But anti-environmentalists in Congress are standing in the way. With your support, we’re making sure Lake Michigan gets the protection it deserves.
- Reducing global warming pollution. Together, we’ve made hard-won progress in the race to protect our children from global warming. Thanks to standards that we helped win, cars and trucks are becoming more fuel- efficient — enough so that we’ll keep 270 million metric tons of carbon pollution out of our skies by 2030. Now we’re ready to push for final approval of President Obama’s plan to limit carbon pollution from power plants.
- Bringing clean energy to Illinois. In late 2012, with critical incentives for wind power set to expire, we organized a major push alongside our national federation. And in the final hour, we succeeded: President Obama and Congress reached a deal to renew these crucial wind incentives. Thanks to your support, we’ll continue to see the growth of clean, renewable wind power here in Illinois.
