PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rhode Island House of Representatives approved legislation Tuesday by a vote of 56-13 that requires electric suppliers to procure 100% renewable electricity by 2033. The bill (H277/S2274) increases the annual percentage of electricity sales met with renewables until reaching 100% clean energy in just over a decade.

The Rhode Island Senate has already approved identical legislation this session. Gov. Daniel McKee is expected to sign the bill into law.

From Hawaii to California, New Mexico to Maine, nine other states have committed to timetables to power their states with 100% clean or renewable energy. Rhode Island’s goal of 100% renewable by 2033 is the fastest of any state in the nation.

Environment America Research & Policy Center’s Senior Director of the Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy Johanna Neumann said:

“Rhode Island’s ambitious timeline puts it at the head of the table with America’s top clean energy states.

“Rhode Island committing to 100% renewable energy faster than any state to date marks a milestone in America’s journey toward a future powered by clean energy. Beyond being healthier for the planet and our lungs, renewables better fossil fuels in speed and cost.

Every state in America has abundant renewable energy potential. Now, we need more states to follow Rhode Island’s lead and set their sights on 100% clean renewable energy. The sooner we generate 100% of our power from renewable energy sources, the sooner we’ll have cleaner air and a healthier climate.”
